Hoover and the depression essays Large portions of the population began to hold President Hoover personally responsible for the depression. It was partially his own fault, since he ignored recommendations to support more vigorous relief programs. While Europe was getting rid of their gold standard, the United States was still nailed to there cross of gold. This put the US at a disadvantage in international trade. It also caused economic conditions to drop to an all time low. Hoover attempted to use government funds to try and pull the economy out of the depression; he rejected demands that he should cut back in order to balance the budget. He spent a large sum of government money, almost $450 million. But nothing seemed to work. Hoover tried to help the agricultural community, by enacting tariffs like the Hawley-Smoot Tariff, which increased the protective rate on farm products from 26% to 50%, but it let foreign governments create trade restrictions, further putting the farmers into debt. Agrarian unrest came to a head in 1932 when a group of farmers established the Farm Holiday Association, the main propose of the organization was to withhold farm products form the market, in order to keep prices high. This form of unrest in the farm belt created a lot of consideration in Washington where the president was facing a national election. Hoover faced almost cretin defeat in the election of 1932. His opponent, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, even before the election was much more popular than the President was. While serving as governor if New York, FDR enacted many programs of government assistance. During his campaign he concentrated on the economic grievances of the country. After promising a New Deal to the American people. FDR was almost guaranteed the election. ...
